Coast 2 Coast Biking Ride 2005
So Joel had this idea, how about we bike from the West Coast to
the East Coast for a bit of a laugh. We didn't need much persuading
and so the C2C Biking Trip 2005 was born.
Well
to be honest there wasn't too much preparation. Toni went to the
Gym a lot and we all got on the bikes in an attempt to
get the leg power going. We had enlisted the help of Wez as a driver
/ expert cook and when Sarah said she could come as well we were almost
sorted. Now where's Whitehaven again?. Read
more about getting ready for the C2C
The
ride started in Whitehaven and gently climbed from the coast to the
foothills of the Lake District. James broke some teeth of his chain
ring within 10 minutes of setting off and Dan did an emergency stop
infront of Toni causing her to do a superman over the handlebars.
So we got off to a great start :-)

We
set off on day 2 in high spirits but knowing that we had a tough
day ahead of us and it didn't dissapoint. We climbed the steep &
rocky Old Coach Road out of Threlkeld Commonand after a rocky
descent on the coach road we cycled along hilly country lanes to
Greystoke and then against a headwind to Penrith.

Day
three was always going to be the killer - cycling out of the lakes
and over the peaks of the Pennines. Over the steep off road trail
to Heartside Height and after a quick lunch we pushed on across
Black Fell in increasingly bad weather. Through Leadgate, Garrigill
and Nenthead
we started on yet another steep, rocky trail up to the highest point
on the C2C.

Day
four started with a steep climb out of the valley onto Wolfcleugh
Common and onto Rookhope. Then the weather turned and there was little
shelter from the torrential rains
as we carried on across Edmondbyers Common and to our delight eventually
spotted a tea room on top of the desolate moor.

Following
the river we were soon passing the famous Millennium Bridge in Gateshead
and then up into Newcastle. Following cycle lanes and footpaths we
made our way through into North Shields and then onto Tynemouth and
the finish.

So, hard work but also a great adventure that we all enjoyed and
will no doubt remember for a long time.
