C2C Day 1 : Whitehaven to Keswick
The ride started at Whitehaven harbour with dipping our back tyres
into the sea and then a gentle warm up ride out of the town following
old railway lines. With the foothills of the lake district ahead
of us we cycled along pleasant country lanes in the blistering sunshine.
We rode past out first lake: Loweswater and onto the Lorton Vale
before our first big climb : The Whinlatter Pass.
Time was against
us as we needed to get bike parts from Keswick so after the pass,
we pushed on down through the gravel trails of Coledale and the
Whinlatter Forest and arrived just in time. Sarah and Wez (our backup
crew) had setup the tents on the other side of the valley so at the
end of the day we had a very tough climb out of the valley up to
Castlerigg with its impressive views of Derwent Water.
