C2C Day 3 : Langwathby to Allenheads
Day three was always going to be the killer - cycling out of the
lakes and over the peaks of the Pennines and it did not disappoint.
We took the steep off road option up to Hartside Height which was
an exhausting grind up a trail that became nothing more than sheep
track near the top. Still we all made it and recharged at the cafe
at the summit.
After a quick lunch we pushed on across Black Fell
in increasingly bad weather. Through Leadgate and Garrigill villages
and then we set off road again through a misty forest (saw red squirrels)
and out into the desolate Flinty Fell. Fog had now descended and
our only company was rather bemused looking sheep. We made it across
the moor and after a fast, rocky decent into Nenthead we started
on yet another steep, rocky trail up to the highest point on the
C2C. Black Hill seemed to go on for ever in the thick fog but eventually
we made it to the 609m summit and across the cloud shrouded Allendale
Common. Finally, wet & exhausted we made it to the Allendale
Inn where we met Wez & Sarah.
