C2C Day 4 : Allenheads to Rowlands Gill
Day four started with a steep climb out of the valley onto Wolfcleugh
Common and onto Rookhope. Turning out of the village, we pushed onto
the final big climb of the Pennines up to the summit of Stanhope
Common and it started chucking it down.
The rocky trail quickly turned
into a stream as we pushed up to a stone ruin at the top of the
moor. Unfortunately this offered little shelter from the torrential
rains so we carried on across Edmondbyers Common and to our delight
eventually spotted a tea room on top of the desolate moor. We raced
to the tea room and were greeted with warm towels and very welcome
refreshment.
We waited out the rest of the storm and then set off
on the downhill that would eventually take us to the coast. We
followed the Waskerley way off the heights of the common and through
forest and parkland. After the tough climbs of the morning and previous
days, this downhill was a welcome change as we raced at top speed
to Consett and then on to our campsite at Rowlands Gill.
